When Stalin orchestrated the Holodomor genocide in Ukraine by taking all food from the country leaving millions to starve, he used media manipulation to cover up his crimes.
Controversial Deepfake technology uses A.I. to create video replicas of people that look just like the real thing. Nearly 100 years later, we used this technology developed to spread lies, to instead tell the truth about the Holodomor.
Sourcing rare historic colour footage of Stalin, we then mapped the Deepfake to the face of a real Russian actor. Recreating Stalin’s office in Moscow from old photographs, we brought Stalin back to life to take credit for the Holodomor.
Anchored by our Deepfake, a social and digital campaign invited people to sign our petition to have the word Holodomor included in all major English dictionaries.
